African Cemetery No. 2

About this landmark

Burial ground used from the 1820s that a Black benevolent society bought in 1869, with more than 5,000 graves on 7.7 acres. It holds 148 military veterans, 112 of them U.S. Colored Troops. The last burials were in 1974, and a state marker was added in 2003.
